Bavaria, culinary delights & e-bikes

Lake Tegernsee is a place full of stories – of people who cook with passion, cultivate exceptional ingredients or offer fine foods with great attention to detail. Many of these culinary gems are located directly along cycling paths and invite you to stop for a break, enjoy great food and get to know the people behind it. Whether freshly smoked fish, homemade pasta or regional vegetables – Lake Tegernsee offers something for every taste.

So grab your e-bike and join me on this special food tour. I’ll show you my personal highlights – places that impressed me with their authenticity, flavor and charm. Ready for a journey through the aromas and stories of Lake Tegernsee? Let’s go!

The shopping tour

Since we only have the small Friday market in Gmund here at Lake Tegernsee, my daily search for fresh vegetables often leads me beyond regular supermarkets to the following places that have truly grown close to my heart.

Stop A: Market Hall

The Market Hall has been run by Sissi Rampf since 1995. Her adult sons operate the fruit wholesaler Wunderlich, which supplies the entire valley’s gastronomy scene with top-quality fruit and vegetables – meaning the Market Hall is right at the source. Freshness is guaranteed. You’ll find everything that’s in season, but also premium papayas from the equator or lemons from Italy whenever you need them. The selection is complemented by cheese, fish, fresh soups, dairy products and even the occasional bag of frozen edamame. If you’re looking for something special for cooking – a specific spice or an unusual sauce – you’ll usually find it here. And if you want to refresh your tableware at home, there’s always a wonderful selection of plates and glasses.

Stop B: Gärtnerei Kuth

From June to November, I stop by here several times a week to pick vegetables from the baskets at this small nursery. Originally intended for self-sufficiency, it eventually became a permanent offering for customers. Numerous tomato varieties, large and small cucumbers, chili peppers, eggplants and zucchini in high summer – and with a bit of luck, for a few days only, plump figs from their own fig tree. As long as the soil or small greenhouses provide produce, you’ll find it here. Once the season is over, that’s it until next year. The trip to Kreuth is worth it for the tomatoes alone from August onwards.

Highlights along the way

1. Italy by the lake: Pastificio Palese

This small pasta manufactory is run by owner Anna-Christina Palese, who prepares fresh pasta daily herself. Pasta, tagliatelle and ravioli are handcrafted with freshly prepared, seasonal fillings.

Julia also offers pasta-making classes, a weekday lunch menu and, of course, dried pasta to take home. Always a great choice!

2. Valeri Feinkost

Anyone who loves Italy and Italian cuisine can’t miss this delicatessen right on Tegernsee’s main street. Whether pasta, fettuccine or a good prosecco – everything Italian is available to take away. And if you feel like it, sit down at one of the small tables at lunchtime and enjoy a plate of antipasti and a glass of wine. Buon appetito!

3. Fischerei Tegernsee

If you like fish, you can’t avoid the Tegernsee Fishery – and if you’re at the lake, you shouldn’t anyway. What used to be a ‘normal’ lake fishery has been transformed by three guys – Christoph, Simpert from Lake Ammersee and Thomas from South America – into a fine fish delicatessen with high-quality gastronomy. Depending on the season, fish comes from the lake itself, from breeding pools in Kreuth or in top quality from the world’s oceans – scampi, oysters, scallops, you name it. The team smokes its own fish, offers fish salads and seasonal specialties like fish cakes. Anyone who needs cooking tips always gets helpful advice. Oh, and yes – they also have champagne.

4.  Feinkost Sollacher

Rosi and Franz Sollacher have been running their delicatessen on the southern main street for many years, right next to the traditional Tremmel bakery. Every morning, Franz drives to Munich’s wholesale market and personally selects the fresh fruit and vegetables on offer each day. Rosi serves customers from behind the ham and cheese counter with a wide range of delicacies. Add freshly made spreads, olives, pasta and truffle chips – classic fine foods. A true highlight, however, is Franz’s wine selection.

You can buy wine in many places around the lake, but my absolute favorite is Franz Sollacher. Why? Probably because Franz has a gift for instantly sensing what a customer is looking for – regardless of grape variety, origin or price range. He always has a great bottle to recommend. On top of that, he also stocks wines from small, independent wineries. The motto: small but excellent.
